Tips:
Evening Primrose For Your Skin
The Evening Primrose is the wild American cousin of the English Primrose. It is a small yellow wildflower that can be found growing all over the North American continent, and has even supplanted itself overseas in Europe and select parts of Asia. The German’s like to call the plant “the night candle”, and leave to them to come up with a name that perfectly describes the plant. With bright yellow flowers that flare open at dusk, looking at the plant, one can imagine it being used as some sort of candle by a smurf, elf, or other small magical forest creature.
Early Uses
The European settlers utilized the plants nutritious roots as a diet staple. The oil from the seeds were also used as a home remedy for hemorrhoids, stomach pain, PMS and bruises. Rich in vitamin E and other beneficial fatty acids, the oil derived from the seeds of the Evening Primrose was especially useful for skin conditions such as eczema and inflammation such as rheumatoid arthritis.
It’s all about the GLA
What has everyone excited about evening primrose oil nowadays is the fact that it is rich in Vitamin E and Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA).
GLA is an omega 6 fatty acid that your body uses to help support vital body functions and maintain healthy cells throughout the body. Proper amounts of this nutrient in the body helps maintain a healthy cardiovascular system, more responsive immune and nervous systems, and even a more robust reproductive system.
GLA and Skin
Adequate amount of GLA via daily supplements of Evening Primrose Oil can also help a person get and maintain healthier looking skin.
This essential fatty acid helps moisturize the skin and protect it from environmental oxidation. When taken internally, the beneficial fatty acids in the oil can help reduce outbreaks of acne and other skin problems by diluting your sebum. The anti-inflammatory properties of the oil also make it an effective treatment for the redness and inflammation brought on by rosacea.
Evening Primrose Oil is available as a gel, oil or capsule and can be found wherever supplements are sold. People with known allergies to certain plants should use caution when taking this supplement and stop taking it if any side effects such as nausea, headaches, or loose stools occur.
